Day 6 - Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)

Just a bit of forewarning, my friends and I just gave up on the Zombieland drinking game after 3/4 of the movie and I'm not at my most sober. So . . .

Killer Klowns from Outer Space is definitely a film for those who like a bit of cheese with their horror. This early precursor to the Scary Movie fanchise and other such satiric films, functions as both a tribute to, and spoof of, those cheesier horror/scifi films of the 1950s and 60s.

Drawing on such source materiatl as The Blob (1953), and even going so far as to borrow its tagline from Alien, this film by the Chiodo brothers tells the story of a small town invaded by aliens who take the shape of clowns in order to abduct humans, wrapping them in large rolls of cotton candy to use for sustenance. As you might expect, as was apparently intended, everything about this movie is absolutely ridiculous and over the top - cotton candy cocoons, a literal clown car, a circus tent spaceship, etc. But even as ridiculous as KKfOS may be, the Chiodo brother must at least be given credit for accomplishing a job well done, given that they most certainly created a cult classic film which both embodies, as well as makes light of, the spirit of its predacessors.

For those going in to Killer Klowns... for the first time, the best advice I can give is, take nohting seriously. This is a film that is meant to be both laughed at and enjoyed with a sense of nostalgia in equal parts. For those of you who are fans of this Chiodo brothers film, you may be intersted to know that the brothers are now at work on putting together a sequel, The Return of the Killer Klowns from Outer Space 3D, which is slated for a 2012 release date. Also, for fans of KKfOS, I would also recommend the 2009 film Alien Tresspass which creates a similar blend of satire and nostalgia.

Tomorrw I will be reviewing the 1980 classic The Changeling.
