Day 11 - Cursed (2005)

Cursed is the child of master of horror Wes Craven once again teaming up with writer Kevin Williamson, the pair that brought us Scream, Scream 2, and Scream 4. It seems this movie however, lived up to its name, faceing every imaginable problem and production delay in the making. But, after rewrites and reshoots and everything else, Cursed finally saw the light of day, and despite its efforts, tends to get a rather middle-of-the-road reaction from genre fans. What seems to be the problem here is the simple dissappointment, not that this is a bad film, but that it had the potential to be so much more.

Cursed tells the story of siblings Ellie and Jimmy - Christina Ricci and Jesse Eisenberg, back when no one really know who he was yet - who are both infected with lycanthrope after encountering a werewolf at the site of a car accident. As these two struggle to cope with the changes that are affecting their minds and bodies, they must also work to unravel the mystery of the identity of the wolf that infected them. There are a number of things wrong with this movie, almost all aspects of it fall short in one way or another - there are issues with pacing and dialogue and everything else, its neither scary nor are the creature effects very well done - but for all its flaws and shortcomings, Cursed is still a Wes Craven film.

While I have to agree with those people who point out each and every dissappointing aspect of the film, particularly with the expectations set up by the Craven/Willamson team up, I would still have to say that this is a fun movie, and well worth a watch. I played a drinking game to this movie not long back - drink for every kill, drink when you hear a howl or see the wolf, etc. - and that's really what this movie is good for, a bit of fun. So long as you don't go into Cursed with the grand expectations attributed its creators, and don't take it too seriously, then it's extremely enjoyable.

For tomorrow I will be viewing The Burrowers (2008).
